    A. INTRODUCTION
The conference will inform the general differential equations and mathematical biology community of important and current work and differing perspectives in a variety of areas. The topics of the conference include difference equations, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, functional differential equations (delay and integral equations), and their applications in biology and other related subjects, such as, ecology, epidemiology, medicine, neurobiology, oceanography, physiology, psychology, zoology, etc. The conference will bring together mathematicians and applied scientists for 5 days of plenary lectures, invited and contributed talks in multiple sessions on specific themes such as bifurcation and chaos, stability theory, neuronal networks, disease transmission, population dynamics, pattern formation, etc. and individual discussions. The conference will also bring physical scientists and biologists who have real data and models that would interest mathematicians and promote collaboration between mathematicians and physical scientists.

The conference will be dedicated to the retirement of Professor Lynn Erbe and Professor Herb I. Freedman (University of Alberta) who have made significant contributions in both research and education in this field in Canada. In particular, their very successfully organized Butler Memorial Conferences on Differential Equations and Population Dynamics have been among the most influential and most important conferences in this area.

    The one-hour plenary speakers include:
  • Leon Glass (McGill University, Canada)
  • Karl P. Hadeler (Universitat Tubingen, Germany)
  • Morris Hirsch (University of California at Berkeley, USA)
  • Simon Levin (Princeton University, USA)
  • Michael Mackey (McGill University, Canada)
  • John Mallet-Paret (Brown University, USA)
  • Klaus Schmitt (University of Utah, USA)
  • Lee Segel (Weizmann Institute, Israel)
  • Hal Smith (Arizona State University, USA)
  • Pauline van den Driessche (University of Victoria, Canada)
  • Paul Waltman (Emory University, USA)
  • Glenn Webb (Vanderbilt University, USA)
  • There will be sessions for half-hour contributed talks. The deadline to receive titles and abstracts is May 1, 1997. Participants are invited to talk on any subject related to the conference topics.
    B. LOCATION
Nova Scotia Canada's ocean playground, is surrounded by four bodies of water, with a coastline that stretches as far as the eye can see, and a seafaring heritage that goes back to the days of the early explorers. The Scenic Travelway System consists of ten coastline highways which allow you to see everything from the legendary Fortress of Louisbourg to the many picture-perfect fishing villages which line the Atlantic shores. Wherever your travels take you, you are sure to be welcomed with friendly greetings which make Nova Scotia unique.

Halifax The Halifax/Dartmouth Metropolitan Area is the business, cultural and educational centre of the Maritime. It surrounds the second-largest natural harbour in the world, Halifax Harbour. On the go, day and night, the harbourfront bustles with activity. Pubs, shops, museums, parks and universities. Point Pleasant Park, Public Gardens, the Citadel and the Shubenacadie Canal. Galleries, concerts, theatre, fine dining. Halifax is accessible through various means of transportation, including: Train, Bus, Highway, Ferry and Plane (Air Canada, Canadian Airlines International, KLM Royal Dutch, American, Icelandair, and Northwest). There is a shuttlebus service to and from the airport which makes stops at all the major hotels in the Halifax area ($11CND one way). Big business and boutiques, it's big-city life with small-town charm.

Dalhousie Founded in 1818 and located in the heart of Halifax, Dalhousie University is an exciting international learning community, devoted to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge. Dalhousie has long been recognized for its excellence in the humanities, the sciences, the professions and in research, as well as in cultural and related activities. The charm of Dalhousie's architectural style dominates the campus.
