The October 22, 1997 issue of the Orlando Sentinel revealed Disney's plans
to replace Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, a staple attraction at the Magic Kingdom
since its opening, with an attraction based on A. A. Milne's Winnie the
Pooh characters.
Within a day, "J.T. Toad," as the huge Mr. Toad fan is known to the online Disney community, had a Save Mr. Toad website up to save Mr. Toad. Part of the protest has included writing letters to Walt Disney World executives and telling them how much Mr. Toad's Wild Ride means to us all. JT Toad has also led several "Toad Ins." On two consecutive Sundays in December, JT and Save Mr. Toad supporters from all over the country gathered at the Magic Kingdom's Toad Hall to show their support. Many wore teeshirts, for sale on the website, which asked other tourists to "ask why Mickey is killing Mr. Toad." And many people did ask. It seems that the majority of the guests at Walt Disney World want to see Mr. Toad saved! The security was tight at both Toad Ins, though more so on the first, December 7, Toad In. The protesters, of course, were entirely peaceful. After gathering and being interviewed by a few reporters, the group rode both tracks of the Magic Kingdom's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. Another Toad In was scheduled for January 11 at press time, and more may be in the works. Check the website frequently. |
Save Mr. Toad's Wild Ride www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/7073 The Save Mr. Toad's Wild Ride website was put up the day after the Orlando Sentinel reported that Mr. Toad's Wild Ride would be replaced by a Winnie the Pooh attraction. "JT Toad" (jt@savetoad.com) runs the site, with some help from other individuals. On the site, you'll find the addresses to Disney and Walt Disney World executives so you can tell them not to kill Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. There is also information about the "Toad Ins" (see article at left) and a place to buy tee shirts to let others know of Toad's possible demise. Be sure to check it out!
